What is Common Rail System? – Four main components

During these years, Common Rail System became more and more pupular for trucks. The common rail system separates fuel pressure generation and fuel injection, and start a new way to reduce diesel engine emissions and noise.

working principle:

Common rail injectors controlled by solenoid valves replace traditional mechanical injectors.

The fuel pressure in the fuel rail is generated by a radial piston high-pressure pump. The pressure has nothing to do with the speed of the engine and can be freely set within a certain range.

The fuel pressure in the common rail is controlled by an electromagnetic pressure regulating valve, which continuously adjusts the pressure according to the operating needs of the engine.

The electronic control unit acts on the pulse signal on the solenoid valve of the fuel injector to control the fuel injection process.

The amount of fuel injected depends on the oil pressure in the fuel rail, the length of time the solenoid valve is open, and the fluid flow characteristics of the fuel injector.

This picture shows the composition of the common rail system:

1. The common rail injector: The common rail fuel injector accurately and quantitatively injects fuel according to the calculation of the electronic control unit.

2. The common rail high pressure pump: The high-pressure pump compresses the fuel into a high-pressure state to meet the requirements for fuel injection pressure and fuel injection quantity.

3. The common rail high pressure fuel rail: The high-pressure fuel rail suppresses the pressure fluctuation of the fuel supply of the high-pressure pump and the fuel injection of the fuel injector by accumulating energy.

4. The electronic control unit: The electronic control unit is like the brain of the engine, controlling the operation of the engine and diagnosing faults.
